AMA-M2

AMA-M2 is an ELISA test for the quantitative determination of IgG antibodies against mitochondrial M2 subtype antigen in human serum or plasma.

Anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA) are a heterogeneous group of autoantibodies directed against various proteins of the outer and inner mitochondrial membrane. Autoantibodies of the M2 subtype bind to the E2 subunits of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC-E2), the branched chain-2-oxoacid dehydrogenase complex (BCOADC-E2), and the 2-oxoglutarate-dehydrogease complex E (OGDC-E2). AMA-M2 are a highly sensitive and specific. They represent a serological hallmark of primary biliary cirrhosis. In addition to early detection and differential diagnosis, determination of the AMA profile allows for an immunological and prognostic classification of primary biliary cirrhosis. In patients with other autoimmune diseases, especially collagenoses, the detection of AMA-M2 makes it possible to detect a developing or associated primary biliary cirrhosis.
