Anti-Intrinsic Factor

Anti-Intrinsic Factor is an ELISA test for the quantitative determination of IgG antibodies against intrinsic factor in human serum or plasma.

Anti-Intrinsic Factor is an ELISA test for the quantitative determination of IgG antibodies against intrinsic factor in human serum or plasma. The detection of these antibodies aids in the diagnosis of pernicious anemia because they are found in 50 to 70 % of affected patients and are highly specific to this disease. Intrinsic factor is a protein formed by parietal cells in the stomach mucosa. The factor plays a crucial role in the absorption of vitamin B12 in the small intestine. Pernicious anemia causes damage to the gastric mucosa. This hinders the synthesis of intrinsic factor and results in a vitamin B12 deficiency. These patients also generate autoantibodies against parietal cells and intrinsic factor. The Anti-Intrinsic Factor test from ORGENTEC uses the human recombinant factor as antigen and thus guaranties maximum efficiency for the differential diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency.
