Alpha-1-Antitrypsin

Alpha-1-Antitrypsin for Alegria® is an ELISA-based, automated, in-vitro test system for the quantitative determination of Alpha-1-Antitrypsin in stool. It is used to evaluate the activity level of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. In addition, faecal alpha-1-antitrypsin is also a marker for protein leakage or increased permeability of the intestinal mucosa when the mucosal barrier is not intact.
This protein is a primary inhibitor that reversibly forms complexes with serine proteases in the digestive tract and with active inflammatory immune cells. Alpha-1-antitrypsin plays an important regulatory and anti-inflammatory role, preventing an attack on neighbouring healthy tissue during an inflammatory event. This function makes alpha-1-antitrypsin an indicator for active inflammatory processes.
Elevated values for alpha-1-antitrypsin in stool are primarily found in cases of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. However, they are also found in cases of enteral protein leakage from other causes, such as Whipple’s disease, necrotising enterocolitis, intestinal tuberculosis, celiac disease, intestinal lymphoma, or systemic lupus erythematosus. The levels of alpha-1-antitrypsin may also be elevated in patients with intestinal polyps, colon cancer, diverticulitis, food allergies, and in pregnancy.
