Anti-TPO
Anti-TPO is an ELISA-based, automated, in-vitro test system for the quantitative determination of autoantibodies (IgG) against thyroperoxidase (TPO) in human serum or plasma.
Anti-TPO is an ELISA test for the quantitative determination of IgG antibodies against thyroid peroxidase (TPO) in human serum or plasma.
Thyroid peroxidase is important for the production of thyroid hormones in that it regulates the oxidative iodination of the tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin. If TPO is inhibited by binding of specific antibodies, less thyroid hormone is produced, which leads to hypothyroidism. Because of the close functional relationship between the two enzymes, antibodies against TPO and thyroglobulin are often found together.
Elevated TPO antibody titers are found in 90 % of patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis). TPO antibodies can also be detected in patients with autoimmune hyperthyroidism (Grave’s disease). In some cases, trace concentrations of TPO antibodies are found in healthy individuals, particularly those of advanced age.
