Thyroglobulin

Thyroglobulin is an ELISA test for the quantitative determination of thyroglobulin (hTG) in human serum or plasma. It is used for the diagnosis and monitoring of pathological changes in the thyroid gland.
Thyroglobulin is produced in the thyroid gland and is responsible for the synthesis of thyroid hormones T3 and T4. Small amounts of thyroglobulin also continually enter the blood stream.
Elevated thyroglobulin levels are found in patients with various pathological changes to the thyroid gland, for example hyperthyroidism, euthyroid goiter, thyroiditis, or thyroid carcinoma.
The thyroglobulin ELISA is primarily used for postoperative monitoring of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma. After a successful thyroidectomy and targeted radiation therapy to remove residual thyroid tissue, the hTG concentration should soon sink below the detection limit after an initial temporary increase.
Because of its easy repeatability, the thyroglobulin ELISA from ORGENTEC offers a valuable, non-invasive alternative to 131I scintigraphy for routine monitoring of patients with thyroid carcinoma.
