The detection of these antibodies aids in the diagnosis of pernicious anemia because they are found in 50 to 70 % of affected patients and are highly specific to this disease.
Intrinsic factor is a protein formed by parietal cells in the stomach mucosa. The factor plays a crucial role in the absorption of vitamin B12 in the small intestine. Pernicious anemia causes damage to the gastric mucosa. This hinders the synthesis of intrinsic factor and results in a vitamin B12 deficiency. These patients also generate autoantibodies against parietal cells and intrinsic factor.
The Anti-Intrinsic Factor test from ORGENTEC uses the human recombinant factor as antigen and thus guaranties maximum efficiency for the differential diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency.
