Anti-Sm
Anti-Sm is an ELISA test for the quantitative determination of IgG antibodies against Sm proteins in human serum or plasma.
The detection of autoantibodies against Sm proteins is one of the ACR criteria for the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Because of the very high specificity (99 %) of this marker for SLE, the reliable detection of Sm autoantibodies suffices as a diagnostic criterion for the disease when fewer than three clinical ACR criteria have been met. However, a negative result does not rule out SLE.
The detection of Sm antibodies serves as a prognostic marker for SLE. Obviously, there is a relationship between the appearance of Sm antibodies and severe organ manifestations of the disease.
