ASCA
ASCA detection facilitates the differential diagnosis of the inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, particularly in the early stages of disease.
The serum ASCA concentration is significantly higher in patients with Crohn’s disease than in those with ulcerative colitis. Studies show a sensitivity of 75 % toward IgG-ASCA and 60 % toward IgA-ASCA in patients with Crohn’s disease. In contrast IgG titers are elevated in only 5 % of patients with ulcerative colitis, and IgA titers in only 7 %.
An additional test for perinuclear anti-cytoplasmic antibodies (pANCA) improves differential diagnosis: the prevalence of pANCA in ulcerative colitis is 50 to 90 %, while in Crohn’s disease it is only 10 to 20 %.
ASCA IgA
ASCA IgA is an ELISA-based, automated, in-vitro test system for the quantitative determination of IgA anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies (ASCA) in human serum or plasma. These antibodies are directed against mannan in the cell membrane of S. cerevisiae.
