Calprotectin
Alegria® Calprotectin is an ELISA-based, automated, in-vitro test system for the quantitative determination of calprotectin in stool. It is used for the evaluation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and for differentiation IBD and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Non-specific inflammatory parameters in blood (CRP, BSG, complete blood count) combined with clinical symptoms like diarrhoea or fever are not sufficiently specific to diagnose inflammation localized in the intestines. Diagnosis of inflammatory bowel diseases is thus often made with considerable delay. The detection of calprotectin in stool samples complements basic laboratory diagnostic tests with a highly diagnostic intestinal inflammatory factor and improves the possibility of diagnosis, especially in paediatric patients.
Elevated calprotectin levels in stool are found in cases of chronic inflammatory bowel disease, infectious gastroenteritis, necrotising enterocolitis, allergic colitis, cystic fibrosis, and colorectal carcinoma. In patients with celiac disease and functional disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, calprotectin levels are in the normal range.
Determination of faecal calprotectin is a simple, non-invasive test that can easily be carried out before any imaging or endoscopic procedures. Calprotectin is a sensitive marker for inflammatory bowel disease and is particularly useful for differentiating irritable bowel syndrome.
