Anti-Endomysium Antibodies (AEA)

Indirect immunofluorescence test for the qualitative determination of anti-endomysium IgA antibodies (AEA) in serum or plasma.

Tissue sections from monkey esophagus (endomysium) are the substrate for detection of Anti-Endomysium antibodies (AEA). AEA of the immunoglobulin A class (IgA) are found in patients with active celiac disease or dermatitis herpetiformis. Their diagnostic sensitivity for celiac disease amounts to 100 % in untreated patients, who do not adhere to a gluten free diet; the diagnostic specificity of AEA is 99 to 100 %.
AEA may be used for disease monitoring. About twelve months after starting with the gluten free diet recommended for treatment of celiac disease, the levels of endomysial antibodies should drop below the detection limit.
International guidelines for diagnosis of celiac disease approve testing for IgA class antibodies against tissue transglutaminase for initial diagnosis. Performing indirect immunofluorescence tests for AEA is always recommended if these first line tests give ambiguous results.
In celiac disease patients presenting with inherent IgA deficiency specific IgG class Anti-Endomysium antibodies can be detected by using the IgG FITC/Evans (M) conjugate (ORG 849, to be ordered separately, not included in the kit). Each component of the kit can be reordered separately.
